he would be hard to chase, but good to catch,
and he could change the world with his hands behind his back

Only one full day had gone by since Harlynn had found herself back at the magical school. Not only did the seventh year prefects have to direct their incoming first years to the common rooms the first night, but some also had nightly rounds with sixth year prefects the next. To her much disgust, Harlynn was chosen as one of the few seventh years. At first, she wanted to just relax in the common room with a cup of coffee and the fire, so once she saw her name posted on Slytherin's bulletin board for prefect rounds that morning, Harlynn groaned and went to her classes in a foul mood. What else could she do? Her prefect position gave great powers that an ordinary student didn't have. Her prefect position, during the second week of school and on when they didn't have partners, gave a great atmosphere to seclude herself for the little while. All she had to do was last that week, just two days out of the week: one day to work with a sixth year and another to work with a fifth year. Harlynn would have two of the floors to herself for an hour to do as she pleased after the first bloody week. Don't get her wrong, Harlynn had always liked catching a student in the act of being out passed curfew, but also liked her nights of pure silence as she slowly strolled the corridors alone way more. Her partner that night was a Ravenclaw in the year just below her. Danika Collins and Harlynn had worked together the year prior during her first time as a prefect. She mainly knew of her as one of the Potter freaks, although the seventh year did not have a problem with her personally. Her annoyance came from how Potter presented himself, really; Arrogant and always toying with girls. No one had to tell her that she did the same to the guys at the school, but there was something about James that really got on her nerves. Harlynn would never back down the challenge to toy with him in such a manner, but she never backed down on the more normal banter with him, either. She didn't know how the girls could fling themselves at him, though! He wasn't terrible looking, but he wasn't a Greek god. And didn't the said girls know that whatever comes out of his mouth is usually repeated for each girl? It was probably common sense to Harlynn, because as stated before, the two were very much alike. She also knew that girls could be very manipulative if used the correct wording. Yes, girls were falling over him because of the lies that he told just so he could have a one-nighter, telling themselves that they were his only, and he said this and that to them. They were very much alike. She had also seen various occurrences where Danika was playing a muggle guitar. At least the two girls had their love of music in common. Harlynn was more of a piano player and singer, though. She tried to teach herself guitar for ages, but could never cut her nails to stubs just for the attempt. For her non-house discriminatory ways of treating the students at the school, the two girl could possibly get along just by there musical talents alone. Although, if that was the case, it wouldn't become any more than an acquainted friendship over a mutual interest. If Danika had an entertaining side to her - that did not include the mention of any Potter - then there would be even more of a chance with being on good terms. Harlynn had no trouble speaking to someone to learn more about them, it was when she knew about their boring personality that she didn't care to talk to them. The girl would be two-faced in a sense when meeting someone. She would act nice at the start and make her mind up after some time of conversing. Maybe it would be an entertaining night. Maybe it wouldn't be a waste of her time. Dinner had ended and all of the students had gone to their common rooms. Harlynn sat slouched on the nearest black leather couch to the entrance door of the Slytherin common room. She had to get up to meet Danika up at the fifth floor to start off, but felt completely lazy that night. Harlynn knew that the best things was to stay in the common room! She filled her lungs up with as much oxygen as she could hold before she let it out as a sigh to liven her a little bit. Her left leg crossed over her right, and her black patent leather heels gave a gleam of light that bounced off of the toe from the fire. The best thing about nightly rounds was that the dress code was slashed, granting them the chance to wear whatever they wanted. The castle had an odd draft to it at night, so Harlynn decided to go simple and warm with skinny jeans, a white V-neck t-shirt, a black blazer, and black pumps. Her simple was probably other peoples' formal wear. Once she mustered the missing energy to stand, Harlynn glanced down to pull down the bottom hem of her t-shirt and then examined the common room itself. She took her first clicking step and saw only a few others occupying the table to her left. Well, at least the younger years are not noisily playing around down here. The fifth floor. Harlynn shook her head as she reached the fourth floor of the moving staircase. The prefects would normally roam the two halls of their house common room and one above or below it. In this case, Gryffindor prefects took the sixth and seventh floors, while Ravenclaw took the fourth and fifth floors. So, naturally, Harlynn and her male house partner would take the dungeons and the first floor, each having their own floor to look after. The stairs were the only objects making noise, not including Harlynn's heels. She looked over the stair railing to see other prefects making their way to their given floors. Why was I named a prefect again? Harlynn thought to herself as she finally made the fifth floor. Grasping the metal handle, a cold chill ran through her hand all through her body. Even though it was fairly warm outside, the castle took long to heat or to cool. She swiftly turned the metal as it became body temperature to see a dimly lit corridor, but no Danika. Harlynn took her first step in and closed the door behind her without a care. The hallways were lit with every other torch. Now, where to wait? Harlynn took one large step to her right, not blocking the door. Her arms folded across her chest as her back leaned against the rough brick. Hopefully she wouldn't give Danika a fright. Although, that would make for an entertaining second day. 1194 WORDS |
